Lawson and Ellen

"Two days after our high school graduation, Lawson went off to the Coast Guard Academy in New London. After graduation in 1970 he has served tours of duty in New York City; Oswego, New York; New London, Connecticut; Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin; Newport, Rhode Island; Washing, DC (twice, living in Maryland); Boston, Massachusetts; Woods Hole, Massachusetts; and Seattle, Washington. His last assignment was as captain of a polar icebreaker which ventured to the Arctic and Antarctic on scientific expeditions.

Ellen is currently on the faculty of the University of Maryland, as a speech pathologist in the Department of Speech and Hearing. She has also taught at Bridgewater State in Massachusetts and Galludaut College in Washington, DC during Lawson’s career.

Ellen and Lawson have had opportunities to travel to Great Britain, Canada, Alaska, Norway, Iceland, New Zealand and Australia. Some of these trips were in conjunction with Lawson’s work, but several were for pure vacation. Lawson also had several opportunities to travel to the former Soviet Union and Russia during the past ten years.

Lawson "retired" last July after 29 years in the Coast Guard. He hopes to continue studying for a Ph.D. in oceanography (at Cambridge University in England) and eventually teach and conduct research at a university. Ellen also hopes to continue in education."
